Jackson University, commonly known as Jackson State or simply JSU, is a historically black university, in Jackson, which is the capital and the most populated city in the state of Mississippi, as well as one of two county seats of Hinds County, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 180 000 inhabitants, during the census of 2008.
JSU was founded in 1877, as Natchez Seminary, by the American Baptist Home Society, becoming a college in 1899, being granted with the university status in 1974, the current name of the university being settled in 1979. Today, JSU consists of 10 different colleges and divisions, including the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Science and the Divisions of Graduate Studies, through which it grants various degrees and offers various fields of study.
The athletic teams which represent JSU in various collegiate championships are known as the JSU Tigers, who compete in the NCAA Division I-FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) Southwestern Athletic Conference, covering sports areas such as tennis, soccer, football, basketball, softball and golf, being best known for their achievements in football, basketball and golf.
The list of notable JSU alumni contains names such as Lem Barney - NFL Hall of Fame cornerback, Vivian Brown - Weather Channel meteorologist, Trey Johnson - NBA Player, Tonea Stewart - Actress and Educator, Cassandra Wilson - Jazz vocalist and musician, Dr. Rod Paige - Secretary of Education in G.
